About the DepartmentThe Department of Political Science has an illustrious history spanning more than six decades. In 1959, the introduction of the undergraduate general degree course led to the inception of the department. Within a short span of five years, i.e. in 1964, the Honours course was successfully initiated. The academic potential of the department has evolved substantially. In addition to the general library, the departmental library is equipped with a rich repertoire of reading materials. With it’s interdisciplinary thrust, the department regularly organises seminars and lectures by eminent experts. Outreach programmes such as educational tours to places of political relevance (like the Vidhan Sabha) are conducted. In tandem with the dynamic nature of the discipline of Political Science, students are trained to undertake critical enquiry, so as to question the constructed realities and constantly learn through unlearning and relearning. Inspired by the creative pedagogy, we aim to establish a democratic dialogic space in our classrooms where learning together is a transformational experience. The enrolment of students from diverse socio-economic background lends heterogeneity to the department. We constantly strive to create inclusive, egalitarian classrooms by engaging with the students at appropriate level of cognition. Remedial classes and tutorials are accordingly designed. Though the department has embraced Information and Communication Technology as indispensable tool for delivery of education, yet it ensures that the communion of care and meaningful engagement between teachers and students is not lost.
